Reasons Why Your Pour Over Tastes Watery and Thin

As a specialty coffee brand, Terminal 3 Roasters is passionate about ensuring every cup of coffee delivers a rich, balanced flavour, whether enjoyed in store or in the comfort of your own home. However, even with the best beans and equipment, achieving a well-balanced brew can sometimes be challenging.

In this latest release of our Gateway article, we address one of the common challenges when brewing pour over coffee: a watery and thin brew. Understanding the factors that contribute to this issue can help you make the necessary adjustments to achieve a rich, flavourful cup every time.

Coffee to Water Ratio

The ratio of coffee to water is crucial in achieving the desired flavour. Generally, a ratio of 1:15 to 1:17 (1 gram of coffee to 15-17 grams of water) is ideal. Using too much water or too little coffee can result in a thin, unsatisfying taste.

Grind Size

Grind size significantly affects extraction. If the grind is too coarse, the extraction can be insufficient, leading to a thin flavour. Try using a finer grind, but be cautious not to go too fine, as over-extraction can make the coffee taste bitter and harsh.

Brewing Time

A short brew time can result in under-extraction, causing the coffee to lack strength and complexity. We recommend aiming for a brew time of 2:30 to 3 minutes for a well-extracted pour-over.

Water Temperature

Water temperature also plays a critical role in extraction. Water that is too cool can lead to poor extraction, resulting in a less rich flavour. Ideally, the water temperature should be between 88-96°C (190-205°F).

Freshness and Quality of Beans

The freshness and quality of your coffee beans are vital. Beans that are stale or stored improperly can lose their flavour and aroma. Always use fresh, high-quality beans to enhance your coffee's taste.

Coffee Origin and Characteristics

Each type and origin of coffee has unique flavour characteristics. The beans you use may naturally have a lighter profile. By adjusting the above factors, you can optimize your pour over brew to achieve a stronger, more balanced flavour.

By paying attention to these details, you can enjoy a perfectly brewed cup that reflects the depth and richness of each coffee beans.
